CAMP VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS

Volunteer Staff Job Descriptions

Please review these job descriptions and assess which positions will be the best fit for you.

 

A Note for New Staff

With the exception of Med Nurses, first time volunteers are nearly always staffed as cabin counselors to provide an opportunity to see how the camp functions at the cabin level. That being said, if you have a specific skill set or certification that you think would make you especially qualified for any position, please select a position on the following page.

 

COUNSELOR REQUIREMENTS - GENERAL

  • High school graduate or equivalent and at least 19 years of age.

  • Dynamically positive attitude.

  • Ability to communicate and work in groups, provide necessary guidance to campers.

  • Ability to assess camper behavior and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Enforce safety regulations, emergency procedures and assigned program schedules as required.

  • Ability to supervise campers, encourage and adapt to campers’ needs within the goals of the camp program.

  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain consistent supervision of the campers at all times.

  • Commit to Staff Training Day for preparation and instructions to ensure the safety and well being of our campers.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to all hazards related to an activity.

  • Commit to five consecutive days of residential living with campers on the island.

CABIN COUNSELOR

  • Identify and meet campers’ needs by living in a cabin and promoting group unity.

  • Successfully guide campers in all aspects of camp activities.

  • Supervise cabin group rotation throughout the day and special needs of individual campers.

  • Monitor the daily health and safety of each camper assigned to you.

  • Work with campers of various ages.

  • Assume responsibility for regular observation of all areas where children are present to make sure counselors are supervising appropriately.

  • Other duties may be assigned as required

MED NURSE (RN)

  • Monitor the health and wellness of each camper assigned, and may live in a cabin.

  • Distribute medications to each camper assigned {approximately 2 cabin groups}.

  • Observe high-risk activity areas as scheduled by Nursing Director.

  • Provide first aid and emergency response as needed.

  • Assume responsibility for regular observation of all areas where children are present to make sure counselors are supervising appropriately.

  • Support all camp activities and programs and assist as needed.

  • These are not the only duties to be performed; some duties may be reassigned and others maybe assigned as required.

ACTIVITY COUNSELOR

  • Live in a camper cabin. Identify and meet campers’ needs and promote group unity.

  • Conduct daily check of equipment in activity area for safety, cleanliness and good repair.

  • Set-up and clean-up activity areas, successful activity operation and teaching of skills.

  • Work with campers of various ages. Other duties may be assigned as required.

  • Utilize and train cabin counselors to assist in your activity.

  • Be trained and currently certified in your activity field.

  • Assume responsibility for regular observation of all areas where children are present to make sure counselors are supervising appropriately.

ADVENTURE TEAM

A dynamic activity area where cabins play games and take on group challenges that encourage teamwork and communication. Adventure staff pull from a wealth of challenge course and adventure resources to lead each cabin group through an age-appropriate yet challenging sequence of adventure games.

ARCHERY / TARGET SPORTS TEAM - Job Description

A one-stop-shop for target practice is on the Range! Teach children to aim, shoot and hit the target SAFELY in this role at camp. In your application, choose either Archery or BB Guns if interested. REQUIRED TRAINING: TBD, potentially August 11, 2024 at Camp Bob Waldorf

ARTS & CRAFTS TEAM

Lead individual and group projects, nature projects, note & thank you cards, etc.

CLIMBING WALL / HIGH ROPES TEAM Job Description

Belay campers and staff on our climbing wall and high ropes courses. Provide a safe and challenging experience for all participants. Camp provides minimum required training, but prior experience is desired. REQUIRED CORE TRAINING: August 11, 2024 - 8am-5pm at UCLA

NATURE SPECIALIST 

Work with the Program Director to create an activity that focuses on the plant/animal life at camp, and then lead that activity during desired camp session.

​

PERFORMING ARTS TEAM

Lead group theatre games for all ages, assist in skit night practice and preparation.

​

WATERFRONT TEAM - Job Description

Counselors are responsible for waterfront safety & activities at camp. Counselors must have current Lifeguard certification. Camp del Corazon will host a Lifeguarding and CPR/First Aid course for interested applicants. REQUIRED TRAINING AND CPR CERTIFICATION: July 13 and July 14, 7:30am-5pm at El Segundo Aquatics Center
 

TRAININGS:

If you would like to apply for the Climbing Wall/High Ropes, Waterfront, or Archery/Target Sports then you'll need to have current certifications from an approved company, or be available to take the free trainings that Camp del Corazon offers. If you apply for one of the above mentioned activity areas and do not have a certification then you will NOT be guaranteed an alternative job at camp.

 

LEADERSHIP TEAM (Returning Staff)

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of CdC experience and previous youth leadership experience.

  • Is available to attend planning meetings in the summer months

  • Excels in flexibility, prioritizing, problem solving; accepts supervision and guidance

  • Physical ability to participate in & supervise all-camp programs throughout term of employment, prior to, and at camp

  • Available to attend most Program and Staff meetings

  • Assume responsibility for regular observation of all areas where children are present to make sure counselors are supervising appropriately.

 

Overall Objective(s):

  • Help train, supervise and evaluate staff in their responsibilities

  • Create and facilitate programs that are fun, safe, and designed appropriately for our unique camper population

  • Embraces the responsibility of being a role model and representative of Camp del Corazon

  • Observes and evaluates camper and staff behavior and applies appropriate behavior management techniques and discipline when needed.

 

VIRTUAL COUNSELOR REQUIREMENTS - GENERAL

  • High school graduate or equivalent and at least 19 years of age.

  • Dynamically positive attitude.

  • Ability to communicate and work in virtual groups, provide necessary guidance to campers.

  • Ability to assess camper behavior and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Enforce safety regulations, emergency procedures and assigned program schedules as required.

  • Ability to supervise campers, encourage and adapt to campers’ needs within the goals of the virtual camp program.

  • Possess strength and endurance required to maintain consistent supervision of the campers at all times online.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to all hazards related to an online activity.

  • Commit to AT LEAST 2 Virtual Family Camp Activities.

VIRTUAL LEADERSHIP TEAM (Returning Staff ONLY)

This is a Program Leadership position specific to Virtual Camp and separate from In Person Summer Camp Leadership.

Virtual Camp Leadership is a great opportunity to try out the leadership role if you've been thinking about applying for camp Leadership but want to gain experience. Virtual leadership not required to apply for in-person Leadership team.

*In Person Summer Camp Leadership is synonymous with Support Staff.

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of CdC experience OR 1 year of experience and previous youth leadership experience

  • Is available to attend VIRTUAL planning meetings in the spring and summer months

  • Excels in flexibility, prioritizing, problem solving; accepts supervision and guidance

  • Ability to participate in & supervise VIRTUAL programs throughout term of employment, prior to, and at VIRTUAL camp

  • Ability to utilize Zoom (muting, using your camera, screen sharing, optimizing sound for videos, using backgrounds, etc. Email kylie@campdelcorazon.org with questions and for tutorial videos)

  • Create and facilitate VIRTUAL programs that are fun, safe, and designed appropriately for our unique camper population
